Children who have not played a lot of chess should stay at their grade level. For those who have played some chess, try to follow these guidelines:
- K-1 section: Students in grades K-1 who are new at chess or rated under 600, and haven’t already placed in the top three of this section.
- K-3 section: Students in grades K-3 who are rated under 800 and haven’t already placed in the top three of this section.
- K-5 section: Students in grades K-5 who are rated under 1000 and haven’t already placed in the top three of this section.
- K-12 section: Students in 6th grade or higher or are rated over 1000 or already placed in the top three in the K-5 section.
If you are still undecided, you should talk things over with your school chess coach or call George Pyne at (352) 373-9110.
